2008 YVC Summer Sensation Program

 

Our 2008 Summer Sensation Program Schedule is complete! The Program is an 8-week intensive volunteering program that will run from June to August. Youth Volunteers will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and experience what it means to help out their community. They will work week-long periods at various community-based organizations in the Greater Kansas City area. As usual, we will provide t-shirts to wear, and projects run from 9am-3pm Monday-Thursday, unless otherwise noted. Also, all programs are free, but donations are always needed and appreciated.

B.E.S.T. – Beyond the Evening Star Theater (Week 2)
BEST is all about learning, creating and teaching performing arts with people with disabilities. Youth Volunteers will be working alongside those with disabilities to create theater production numbers that will be shown at area schools to show what an inclusive community looks like.

Boys and Girls Club (Weeks 2 & 6)
They provide a fun and safe environment for youth ages 5-18 to learn, meet new people and grow. We will be working with children, ages 5-8, on activities related to literacy.

Della Lamb Community Center (Week 8)
Originally created to provide child care for poor, working mothers, Della Lamb now provides education for low-income families with early education, child care, youth services, adult services, and social services. We will be sorting and bagging school supplies that support low-income youth.

Fairmount Community Center (Week 5)
The FCC is moving and they need our help! They have many good programs including hot lunches for seniors, movie nights for youth, and even line dancing. We will be cleaning the office, packing boxes, painting, and moving their supplies.

Habitat for Humanity Kansas City (Week 8)
Want to see what goes into building a house? Habitat for Humanity works to fulfill the dream of home ownership for low-income families. We will be helping to build a house that will be sold at no interest to a family in need. Learn about the problems that many face when trying to buy a home, and really make a difference in the lives of a local KC family.
You must be at least 16 years old to participate in this project
This project is Tuesday-Thursday only!

Habitat for Humanity ReStore (Week 4)
ReStore’s mission is to support the construction of houses by the Kansas City Habitat for Humanity through the collection and sale of new and used building materials. The materials are kept out of our landfills and remain in circulation where they can benefit the Kansas City community. Volunteers will be dismantling displays from the Skills USA convention, which means they need us to take apart walls and salvage lumber. Bring your muscles, your hammer and (perhaps most importantly) your common sense.
You must be at least 16 years old to participate in this project
Please wear jeans or long pants, no shorts!

Harvesters (Weeks 3, 5 & 8)
As Kansas City ’s largest food bank, Harvesters and its network of agencies are available to provide food to families when they need a helping hand. Come sort and box donated food and package donated household items. Learn about the problems of hunger in our community and how we can help to put an end to hunger in our community.

J-14 Enterprises (Weeks 1 & 3)
Volunteer with us at an urban organic farm in Kansas City , KS . This farm uses no synthetic materials/fertilizers and raises fresh produce that is donated to organizations that can best use them. The farm is also home to a variety of animals. Come see a city farm in action!

Kansas City Community Kitchen (Weeks 7 & 8)
Enjoy cooking? This community kitchen, located in the basement of Grace and Holy Trinity Church , serves about 500 meals each day. We will creating those meals from start to finish by preparing, serving, and cleaning up after lunch. We’ll also be learning about homelessness and hunger in Kansas City .

Kansas City Free Health Clinic (Week 1)
The clinic is an integral part of the health care delivery system in the Kansas City community. Youth Volunteers will create banners, cards, and thank-you gifts; they will also compile media and educational packets. We’ll also be helping outside of the facility trimming bushes, planting flowers, and painting. Youth will gain an important understanding of the diverse populations in our community and will also receive educational information about STD prevention.

Kansas City Rescue Mission (Week 1)
KCRM is an agency offering freedom and hope to the poor and powerless, empowering them to reach their full potential. We will be helping in the kitchen, cleaning, sorting donations, and some outside work!

Operation Breakthrough (Weeks 4 & 7)
Love kids? Come help out at this inner city daycare center by being a teacher’s aide, working in the library, food and clothing pantries. The mission of Operation Breakthrough is to help children who are living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them a safe, loving and educational environment.
You must be at least 14 years old to participate in this project.
A TB and physical must be on record for your participation.

Operation Iraqi Children (Weeks 3 & 7)
Join us to assemble school kits for children living in Iraq while we explore what it’s like to be a child there. These school kits are vital for these children, and volunteers will be making a big difference! We will be sorting incoming shipments, checking them, and preparing the outgoing kits.

Parkville Nature Sanctuary (Weeks 3 & 4)
Parkville Nature Sanctuary offers multiple hiking/walking trails. We will be helping to chip the trails and to eradicate non-native and invasive species. Youth will also learn about the wildlife of the area as they go on an interpretive hike throughout the sanctuary by the Director of the park, Jim Reed.

Roeland Park Community Center (Week 5)
The Roeland Park Community Center has some important work for us to do this year! The new vegetable garden needs maintenance and care, and we will be digging paths and building a bench!

S.E.A.T. (Weeks 2 & 6)
S.E.A.T., or Simply Equine Assisted Therapy, is a not-for-profit organization utilizing horses to influence people in their way of thinking, reacting and in gaining perspective about their lives. We will be installing fences and working outdoors to revitalize the property.

Shoal Creek Association (Week 1)
Shoal Creek maintains 17 historic buildings in Hodge Park in North Kansas City . We will be cleaning buildings and washing windows. If it’s nice outside, we can clean trails, paint fences, and feed chickens!

Swope Ridge Geriatric Center (Week 6)
At this assisted living facility for the elderly Youth Volunteers will be participating in a variety of intergenerational activities such as arts & crafts, card & board games, gardening and plays & skits with the residents. Come with a willingness to interact with individuals who have lots to share.

Turnstyles Thrift Store (Weeks 4 & 6)
Turnstyles is a thrift store operated by the Catholic Charities and all proceeds are used by the Catholic Charities to help fund many services to the community. We will be maintaining the store, sorting through donations, creating displays, and pricing items!

United Music Charity Foundation (Weeks 2 & 5)
The UMCF is dedicated to helping bring music and arts education to underfunded KCMO schools. We will be learning about the production of music as well as making improvements to the facility.

The YVC Forum (Week 7)
The Youth Volunteer Corps will work to create and perform monologues about social issues that affect the lives of teens. The Youth Volunteers will learn about improvising, playwriting, and facilitation techniques based on the work of Brazilian theatre activist Augusto Boal who created the Theater of the Oppressed movement. They will also create costumes and props to be used in a performance. This project is the right fit for anyone who believes they have an important message to share with our community.
