One Homeless Night
Each year, 3.5 million individuals are homeless in America. Children and teens account for about 1.3 million of that total. If all the displaced youth were gathered into one area, it would create what would be roughly the 6th-largest city in the United States, a metropolis about the size of Phoenix, AZ.
Each November across the Kansas City metro, hundreds of youth participate in "sleep-outs" to learn about the issue of homelessness and serve those in need. One Homeless Night is an opportunity for youth to feel the burden of displacement by taking part in a comprehensive poverty simulation in which volunteers can feel what it's like to have no home. Sleeping outside in the chilly November air in a "cardboard city," youth will learn the value of teamwork and gain a better understanding of the plight of impoverished teens in our city.
