Yuhuan has logged over 145 volunteer hours since first serving with YVCKC in 2011. His most memorable service experience with YVCKC was during the 2013 Summer of Service, when he volunteered with a group at a YMCA youth camp. He helped aid the camp counselors and worked with kids on inquiry building projects and craft making. He found the experience to be incredibly fun and concurrently endearing.
“My primary motivation and inspiration [for volunteering] comes from my belief that we as human beings and members of our community should fulfill and meet certain expectations and in turn be able to help friends, family, and other people,” Yuhuan said.
Yuhuan is most passionate about addressing the lack of education in his community. He hopes to provide after-school tutoring and other services to not only improve grades, but to also stir up interest in learning and the pleasure that it can have. He’s particularly interested in Project BEST, a non-profit that engages middle school students in STEM-related lessons/activities in after-school sessions.
"He has a strong work ethic and I can always count on him to get right to work and do a great job," says Amanda Metzler, team leader at YVCKC. "Yuhuan has such a quiet influence on service projects, and sets a great example for all of our other volunteers."
In honor of National Volunteer Week, YVCKC is recognizing an outstanding youth volunteer each day. These volunteers have demonstrated active citizenship and a commitment to community service. Each Volunteer of the Day will also be nominated for the Daily Point of Light award.
