Summer Program Q & A
What is a summer project?
Summer projects are usually one week long, Monday to Thursday, from 9AM to 3PM. You can volunteer all 8 weeks or just one week of the summer; however, we would love to have you volunteer with us for at least 2 weeks! You will be on a team with other Youth Volunteers led by a trained YVC Team Leader. How much does it cost? Our summer program is free! Donations are, however, always needed and appreciated. The estimated cost per participant is $250 per week. How do I sign up? First, take a look at the variety of service projects and find ones that interest you the most. Then, complete the registration form (and the parent permission and youth agreement forms - click here to download the forms). Have your parent sign them and mail or bring them to our office (Youth Volunteer Corps of Greater Kansas City, Attn: Team Leaders, 4600 West 51st Street, Suite 300, Shawnee Mission, KS 66205). Can I bring a friend? Of course! However, they must first register with YVC. If your friend does not/did not have time to register by mail, registrations will be made available at our 2007 summer orientations on May 31st (at noon or 6pm) or June 1st (at noon or 6pm). What do we do at the YVC 2007 Summer Orientation? It's important that you attend one of the orientations either May 31st (at noon or 6pm) or June 1st (at noon or 6pm) because you'll get details and specifics on all of the projects. You will be introduced to the YVC Team Leaders and the Program Director. And, if you are itching to ask more questions about our program, you can do that at the orientation. What are the benefits? You can meet other youth from across Greater Kansas City, give back to your community, make a real difference, gain your school's required community service hours, be challenged by new experiences, feel you are doing something meaningful, pad up your college application or resume and have fun! Will there be supervision at the project sites? Yes, there will be trained YVC Team Leaders at each project, in addition to the volunteer coordinator(s) of the agency with which we are working. Where do the teams meet? Most teams will meet at the project site. However, it varies with each project. You will get more detailed information on your projects after you register. Will lunch be provided? For most project sites, lunch will only be provided for the Youth on Thursdays. Youth Volunteers should pack their lunches during the remainder of the week. |
